About the Theory Course, explanation to teachers,

As any good musician will tell you, music theory is an integral part of a well rounded music education. Not only does it provide a strong backbone for music performance, it also gives students the skills to continue to grow as musicians through teaching and composition. It remains an integral component of tertiary entrance examinations for students wishing to study at university level.

The digital age has seen a number of major changes to the global educational environment. With students packing more and more activity into their lives, very little time provision remains to study a subject that may seem boring and for which all learning methods and assessment can’t be done on a computer (along with their other assignments.)

For this reason St Cecilia School of music is proud to present an interactive online theory course which provides theory lessons for students from beginner level to Certificate 3. Each course delivers:

External exam

Upon successful completion of the external exam students gain professional certification for their theory level by a standard that is recognised throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. For further information on the external exam please visit Examination and Certification.

Course structure

The course has been designed to be completed at weekly, half-hour intervals similar to the schedule of practical music lessons. However, students may complete the course over a shorter or longer period of time if they so desire. For further information on course content and topics covered visit Course Structure and Fees.

Access

Upon registering for a course the student will receive a username and password allowing them to login and out as they find convenient. Once registered each theory course is open for a given user for the period of one full year, allowing students ample time to complete each level.

Learning and Assessment

Each weekly lesson presents new theory concepts which are taught and then practiced. The student is assessed through interactive online games and exercises that generate a score. The student will then be advised to either practice further or continue to the next exercise. Twice during each course the student will complete a revision test which covers the concepts learnt in the previous lessons. Students will be unable to pass through this test without gaining an 80% score. Ample opportunity for revision with renewed additional exercises will be provided should this be the case.

Course completion

At the completion of the course students will complete a practice exam that covers all aspects of the course. Upon successful completion of the practice exam students will receive, to their email, a certificate of participation and will also be asked if they would like to register for a St Cecilia external theory examination. Once this registration is completed St Cecilia will contact the student to arrange a suitable time for a supervised exam to be completed.

Support

The course comes with full online support with higher grades of music theory - up to Certificate 8 - currently in development for release later this year.

We hope you find this course as useful as we do. Already we have witnessed a wonderful response from our existing student body with music theory being fun and easy to learn online.

If you have any further inquiries about the course please don’t hesitate to contact us through this site and we will be more than happy to provide you with the information you need.
